1. Health Insurance: What works and what not?

Three members of the HIP Platform (ECORYS, UMC St Radboud and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT)) are currently involved in a joint research effort. The overall objective of the study is to establish an overview of teh existing evidence on impact, strenghts and weaknesses of health insurance arrangements for the poor in low-income countries using peer-reviewed and grey literature.

2. Community Health Insurance in Uganda

Since 2000, Cordaid has been involved with two hospital based schemes (Mutolere and Nyakibale hospitals) and with MicroCare as a third party payer (Kisiizi hospital), as well as experiments with prepayment schemes in lower level units. Based on this experience and lessons learnt, Cordaid started to support CHI in four hospitals plus lower level units in the South West of Uganda.

3. Mutolere health insurance scheme

The (catholic) St Francis hospital in Mutolere, started a community based health insurance scheme in 1998. Their objective is to increase the access to quality health care even at times of the year when families have little income. Cordaid supports the health insurance scheme since 2007.

5. Integrated Programmes - Reaching the poor in Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme

The Government of Ghana has passed a national Health Insurance Act in 2003 to set up mutual health organizations (MHO) in every district in Ghana, and is thereby the first country in Africa to implement MHO nation wide. As of January 2007, more than seven million people have enrolled in MHO, which equals coverage of more than 35% of the total population.
